 Data quality improvement

With the spread of IT solutions in the past decade, most of the companies and institutions have framed their IT systems for the support of business processes. After the initial construction of the databases and in connection with the normal operations of the individual companies, these systems have started to accumulate large volumes of data of varied nature and diverse quality. These data make up data assets that can be turned into economic benefits when the company possesses the necessary expertise.

The value of the accumulated data assets are fundamentally determined by the quality of data. Appropriate data quality can be ensured only with continuous planning and control that are often compromised by the short-term interests of the company. Our company has earned experience throughout several decades in the field of screening and improving the quality of IT databases, and particularly GIS data. The planning of data screening operations considers the special demands of the client, and is aligned with the rules pertaining to the given specialized field. Automated and manual data screening procedures are equally used, and in this context we also rely on public databases in addition to the databases of our clients. The metadata of the screening process are stored, and therefore it is known of each piece of data what procedures it underwent, and when. The processed data are described with probability properties that help users to interpret the outcomes of screening.

A strong emphasis is laid on the quality control of screening. This closed process involves sampling and a statistical approach, thereby ensuring the compliance of the screened final product with the quality requirements.

Data migration, construction of databases

The consistent evolution of IT and the emergence of new business demands soon make systems just recently introduced obsolete. On the other hand, the value of the data managed by these systems continuously increases, and outlives the transformation of the devices, software applications. Nowadays, database construction principally means the migration of existing databases. The technical and business types of migration have to be clearly distinguished from each other. In the latter instance, both the technical platform and the set of rules connected with the IT system change upon switchover.

We have a number of domestic and international reference works in relation to the successful business migration of GIS databases. The migration is planned, the interim database is structured and the data screening operation associated with the migration is designed with the use of the generally applied methodology, and they are all executed under strict project supervision. The process and quality properties are stored in a transitional database, and transferred into the database of the target system as demanded. The quality of migration is ensured with the testing of the dedicated software applications used in the process and the comprehensive documentation of the process.

Data consolidation

Now and then, every company arrives at a point where their isolated records need to be organized in an integrated system. Data contents so far redundantly existing without problems start to generate serious difficulties when migration is concerned, and raises the issue of the necessity of data consolidation. To satisfy all business demands in the integrated system, data consolidation is performed with the screening, amendment and qualification of data.

The planning phase of consolidation involves the assessment of the contents of databases, the framing of the rules of association and development of technologies. The analysis of sources points out the absence of data, redundancies, and defines the preparative tasks to be executed. Beside association, the implementation of consolidation extends to data replacement and data generation.

Technology planning

  • Drawing up the database specification that systematizes the requirements in connection with the database. Requirements can be general (topology, preview, accuracy), or alternatively can cover certain database objects and their quality.
  • Elaboration of the processing technology describing the processes, procedures and methods of conversion and migration.
  • Working out the operational instructions in the form of manuals for operators involved in manual processes, as detailed descriptions of the processes belonging to the given technology on the level of work instructions.
