Updating of the Italian vehicle navigation database system Navteq commissioned Geometria to up-date the vehicle navigation database, covering the area of 20 Italian provinces (48,000 sq kilometres). Quick and high quality work was due to the several years’ experience of Geometria, the reliability and efficient technology on the area of producing and updating vehicle navigation databases.

This technology is able to handle data from different sources to the definition of road network geometry, analogue, raster and vector maps, digital orthophotos together and process them with additional attribute data e.g. streets and settlement names, geographical names. The technology handles the thematic elements, important from the viewpoint of navigation differentiated, so it is suitable to navigation database building among settlements or within settlements. The high quality work is ensured by the built-in procedures of the technology process

The technology operates on LAN connected workstations, so it enables the process of even 15 000 kilometres road network a day. Updating the road network geometry among Italian settlements required the application of analogue maps on the scale of 1:5 000 and 1:10 000 and digital orthophotos, beside existing road data (ADAS). Beyond road network, other cartographic features, e.g. railroad network, hydrography, woodland, buildings and public administration boundaries supporting vehicle navigation, have been digitalised.

The developed technology is proposed for execution of vehicle navigation database building, which requires the record of widespread road network with the help of different data sources in the long run and high quality. The technology provides a cost-effective solution to these tasks.
