Company history

Geometria Ltd. was established in 1986 by János Szilágyi. Since its foundation Geometria has had a determining role in network information and has been the leading service supplier of geographical information system (GIS) applications in Hungary.

In the period before 1989 the company took relatively considerable market risk by committing itself to seeking ways and means and intensive innovative work. The application area of the early systems comprehended a very wide scale of the GIS users, ranging from the Municipality systems, environmental protection systems, town and route designing systems to the systems analysing and recording criminal offences on public domains.

By the end of 80’s three professionally significant results have been reached, which have determined the future of the company: Capital Municipality GIS System FÕTÉR, the topoLogic GIS basic software and the National GIS Basic Database OTAB.

The changed political situation resulted in FÕTÉR not being developed in its original form, but several products derived from it are being used even nowadays. FÕTÉR had a determinative role in development of utility systems in Budapest and its realisation in General Structure Plan of Budapest (ÁRT) in digital form.

The introduction of topoLogic, the basic GIS software, which reached significant success on different professional forums, took place on the International Cartographic Conference in Budapest, in 1989. topoLogic resulted in establishing profound GI special knowledge related to the basic GI software development at the company, and the completed product initiated software export to Western-Europe.

At the end of 80’s and at the beginning of 90’s the company performed several regional planning projects and solutions, supporting regional development technologies. Some of them are the followings: Regional Development Information Pilot System (TEIR) developed for the Ministry of the Interior; GIS based highway studies (M0, M3, M5 motorways, motor road No. 85) for the Regional Development and Town Planning Company ( VÁTI); feasibility study of the Regional Integrated Monitoring System within the frame of PHARE Project, prepared for the Ministry of the Environment and Regional Development.

Market Development

Within the field of GIS, Geometria has always supported the market development actively. In 1989 Geometria launched, and in its early stage sponsored the first scientific periodical Térinformatika (GIS). The review is available only online from January 1, 2008 ( .

Due to the active contribution of the company, HUNGIS Foundation was established in 1991 in order to enable the spread of GIS in Hungary. HUNGIS performs its activity as a trade forum, as an expert corporation and as a supporter of GIS training.

Completing the digital geographical map of the entire country constituted a milestone in the development of GIS in Hungary, since it enabled work on different regional GIS designing and analysing systems. The National GIS Basic Database has been widely applied even nowadays.

Gaining Experience

Commencing the export activity was a determinative moment of the first part of last decade. The main aspect of software export was marketing topoLogic, a GIS basic software for different applications, in co-operation with a German company, Dornier GmbH. The software export and the Dornier Project reacted upon our project management methods and created the base of establishing modern software developing technologies and the financial fund of gaining further technical experience. The application-oriented knowledge enabled the company to take part in Intergraph-based application-developments in different European countries, from Stockholm to Athens, obtaining significant professional experience.

The first work of the company in the field of database-development was producing large vehicle navigation databases for the Dutch Philips’ subsidiary, the European Geographics Technologis BV. Nowadays the application of such databases in Western European countries is in general use.

This project established the quality assurance methods and the data conversion technologies related to digital map drawing. After having the first reference, from the first part of 90’s the company has successfully competed in several European open tenders, thus having the possibility to co-operate in topographic and cadastral digital map production in Holland, Germany, Denmark, etc.

The appearance of multinational IT companies in Hungary and the availability of GIS software tools spread on the world market made it inevitable for Geometria to reconsider its market strategy. Concerning its customers, Geometria gradually started to focus on utility companies in its market activity and a change was made in the area of applied software technology. Dating from this time, Geometria has laid its applications on highly reliable GIS basic software already tried out on international market and possessing widespread references.

Commencing the development of the Low-voltage Information System for the Budapest Electricity Works Co. and starting the preparation of HALIR Project for Budapest Waterworks Co., aiming the registration of water supply network in 1990, was a significant milestone in the history of the company.

Both systems filled up with data and after several revisions are still being operated at the several hundred workplaces of Customers. These works were followed by numerous projects developed for domestic utility companies during the decade.

Aiming to meet the export market demands, the company primarily settled the quality assurance methods in the field of database construction, and the processes corresponding to quality assurance system, ISO 9001 were successfully audited in 1995. The audit was successfully performed again in December of 2000, but this time amplified to the whole production and service activity.

In order to assist the export activity in Holland, Geometria BV, owned in 100% by the parent company was established in Leiden in 1995. The rate of export reached up to 50% of the company’s income in the middle of 90’s. The role of the export in the company’s activity, because of the fast development of the domestic market, is relatively lower but still considerable.

In the middle of the decade Geometria established its majority-owned subsidiaries. Infograph Ltd. is dealing mainly with business GIS and GIS product marketing, GeoAdat Ltd. is specialised to make special GIS databases. One of the outstanding projects of GeoAdat Ltd. is the participation in the control system of German agricultural subsidies. In connection with the EU enlargement process, the opportunity presents itself that Geometria applies the unique experience of the field in the Hungarian enlargement process. Geometria gained a majority ownership in Intergraph Hungary Ltd. in 1997. The company has being completed the service portfolio continuously and known as graphIT Ltd. today, it became an outstanding market participant of the field.

Large Project

Realisation of large projects (MVM MAHALIA, Vivendi NIS) marks the second half of the 90-ies. Due to the co-operating experience gained during the development of these projects, Geometria became suitable to realise large systems in co-operation with numerous partners.

The complexity of large systems demanded the application of new planning, development and test processes (e.g. SSADM, CASE, etc.) The risk of large projects with relatively long realization time managed to handle with flexible project management. By realization of these numerous integration tasks (e.g. SAP, billing systems) have to be carried out. So, our systems have became adequate for participation in the company’s IT integration.

The increase of several hundreds workplaces, implemented by the company resulted in the growing demand of support and operation. The not rarely 7 days 24 hours operation service, amounting about a quarter of our turnover, is one of our most important services.

After the successful market liberalization in the past few years, Geometria has continued the market expansion toward the telecommunication companies. Considering the complexity of the telecommunications network and the fast development of the companies, Geometria provides out-of-the-box and close to out-of-the-box branch-specific solutions in this market segment. Based on the specialities of the telecommunication sector, Geometria has developed an industrial application, the Geometria Telecom Template (GTT). Based on GTT frame system, Geometria developed the Bandwidth Management Module (SGM). Geometria has extended its portfolio with GE Network Solution, the recently most dynamically developing GIS tool, which possesses the “Smallworld Network Inventory” solution, an application developed in details for the telecommunications sector.

Based on the applications above, the company has already successfully implemented its network inventory systems for Invitel, T-Com (originally the First Pest Telecommunication Co.), the Hungarian Power Companies Ltd and Antenna Hungária.

Based on its past on GIS market and telecom experiences, Geometria developed a GIS system as fundamental element of location based services. To launch the first location based service in Hungary, T-Mobile chose the product of Geometria.

Public Administration

Geometria makes the most of its experience in GIS projects of the last decade in large public administration projects. We consider important our former participation in the Phare project, TAKAROS, aiming the update of land registration. This role can involve the successful participation in the land-registration-based projects later on, e.g. in the agricultural subsidy system.

In 2002, financed by Phare, the map-based registration of vine and fruit plantations and the Digital Map System, enabling the production of plantation statistics, have been delivered to the Hungarian Central Statistical Office. The system provides the production of statistics extending to the whole country according to EUROSTAT regulations of the system and the nomenclature of EU regional units. This result can also mean a step towards participation of tasks regarding the EU enlargement.

Network Applications

In the new millennium, due to the extension of the utility market liberalisation, new demands on the increase of network activities’ usefulness and efficiency have been generated in the field of IT services. Network registrations, which had been developed at certain companies, made it possible to meet these requirements. The emphasis had been moved from network registration to integrated IT solutions gradually. Geometria implemented several applications in the past years, which directly support the network construction, maintenance and operation activities, improving their effectiveness, increasing customer satisfaction and reducing operation risks.

This activity covers the area of workforce management system (WFMS), workflow management, maintenance and operation support system/distribution management systems (DMS) and event statistical systems. These systems, which have been highly integrated into the daily operational and maintenance activities of the companies, contribute determinant to the fast and full return of network registration investment.

The complexity of utilities’ business processes has been increasing continuously, which results that integrated solution of IT systems has become a critical factor of success. Geometria takes over the task of network information systems’ and enterprise resource planning systems’ integration, and provides a solution by using the most up-to-date technologies for message transferring.

A special task of the industry is the consolidation of the network related IT environment after the company’s merge or acquisition, especially in case of huge and valuable database. Geometria provides network database audit, data cleaning, quality improvement and data migration by using detailed, documented technology on the basis of its year-long experience both for Hungarian and Dutch (ENECO, NUON, WML) utility companies.
